WE PRAISE GOD
Chiming of the Hour
†Organ Prelude - “Our Father Who Art in Heaven” ...................................... Johann Sebastian Bach
Rev. James Richardson
Welcome and Call to Worship ...............................................................................Rev. Josh Brewer
Lent is not a time for being miserable, but for taking stock and resetting our aims for
following Christ.
Loving God, in you we trust; let us never fool ourselves.
Lent is an opportunity for healthy repentance -- repentance for our indifference in the
face of the permeating evil of the world, repentance for personal sins which we have
glossed over.
According to your loving kindness, remember me, God of goodness and saving
grace.
Lent is a time for joy; the exhilaration that comes from defying temptations, from
turning our face to the light that shines on the narrow path of Christ Jesus, from
walking into adverse winds and enjoying small victories day by day.
Make me to know your ways, O God; teach me your paths, for you are the God of
my salvation and my true happiness.
During this reflective season of Lent, the Lord be with you.
And also with you.

*Affirmation of Faith
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ
his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day
he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
*The Gloria Patri No. 579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen. Amen.

Anthem - “Jesus, Lover of My Soul”.........................................................................Henry Coleman
Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high:
Hide me, O my Savior, hide, till the storm of life is past;
Safe into the haven guide; O receive my soul at last!
Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee;
Leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me.
All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring;
Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing.
Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee;
Spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.
(The text is by Charles Wesley.)

Call to Prayer
Silent Prayers (with piano music)
Congregational Confession
God our Redeemer, we confess that we are people of ashes and dust. You have
claimed us in your covenant, yet we forget your steadfast love. You seek us out in
the wilderness, yet we continue to wander in our sin. Forgive us, God of grace.
Wash us clean once again, so that we may return to you and follow your holy way;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Words of Assurance

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive

temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and
the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
