THE WORSHIP OF GOD

April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday Eleven O’clock

WE PRAISE GOD

Chiming of the Hour

†Prelude - “Sinfonia” (Solomon)...................................................................................... G.F. Handel

Kyle Ballantine, organist

Welcome and Call to Worship .............................................................................. Rev. Josh Brewer

This is the day when tears are wiped away, shattered hearts are mended, and fears

are replaced with joy.

This is the day the Lord rolls away the stone of fear, throws off death’s clothes, and

goes ahead of us into God’s future.

This is the day the Lord has made! Death has no fear for us, sin has lost its power

over us, and God opens the tombs of our hearts to fill us with life.

This is the day the Lord has made! Let us praise the living God!

(The text is by Rev. Nathan Decker.)

Invocation ..............................................................................................................Dr. Tom McCann

Choral Introit - “Alleluia! Love Lives Again!”................................................................. John Carter

O sing to greet this glorious day. Alleluia! Love lives again!

Though once within the grave he lay: Alleluia! Love lives again!

From the grave he rose to the skies above, and so shall we, by redeeming love.

The song we raise is the glad amen. Alleluia! Love lives again!

(The text is by Mary Kay Beall.)

†*Hymn No. 123 - “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” ............................................................. easter hymn

*Affirmation of Faith

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ

his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin

Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day

he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of

God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Gloria.....................................................................................................................judas maccabeus

Thine is the glory,

Risen, conquering Son;

Endless is the victory

Thou o’er death hast won.

WE PROCLAIM GOD’SWORD

First Lesson - Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24.........................................................Joe McNellage, lay reader

Second Lesson - Acts 10:34-43

†Anthem - “This Joyful Eastertide”..............................................................................John Ferguson

This joyful Eastertide, away with sin and sorrow!

My love, the Crucified, has sprung to life this morrow.

Had Christ, who once was slain, not burst his three-day prison,

Our faith had been in vain. But now has Christ arisen.

My flesh in hope shall rest and for a season slumber,

‘Till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in number.

Death’s flood has lost its chill since Jesus crossed the river.

Lover of souls, from ill my passing soul deliver.

(The text is by George Woodward.)

Gospel Lesson - John 20:1-18

Call to Prayer

Silent Prayers

Prayers of the People

Lord, in your mercy,

Hear our prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will

be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive

us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and

the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer Response...................................................................................................hymn of promise

There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody;

There’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me.

From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery,

Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

(The text is by Natalie Sleeth.)
