2/24/19 - Rev. Josh Brewer

Last Sunday we said farewell to Rev. Josh Brewer and his family. This week we share a very special service from 2/24/19. Not only did Josh bring us a fantastic sermon, but we also got to witness the beautiful baptism of his daughter. Please enjoy a repeat of this service in honor of the Brewer family.

Welcome and Call to Worship ................................................................................Rev. Will Barnes

Listen to the stories of God,

Passed down by the faithful from age to age.

Listen to the teachings of Jesus,

Who showed us how to live, love, and serve.

Listen to the voice of God,

Proclaiming the broken world “beloved.”

Listen and worship, People of God,

For God is here among us!

Invocation

†*Hymn No. 132 - “Come, Great God of All the Ages”...................................................abbot’s leigh

*Affirmation of Faith

We believe in God, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all

God’s works, and whose will is ever directed to the good of all people.

We believe in Jesus Christ, the gift of God’s unfailing grace, the ground of our

hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the divine presence in our lives, through which we

constantly know the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need.

We believe that this faith should express itself in the service of love, as shown

through the example of our Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come

upon the earth.

*Gloria Patri No. 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen. Amen.

WE PROCLAIM GOD’SWORD

†The Baptism of Caedie Brewer

Introductory Statement - Rev. Josh Brewer

Unison Blessing

We thank God for your faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord. We happily welcome you

into the Church of Jesus Christ, and into the membership of this congregation. We

will do the work of Christ together – cooperatively, compassionately, and

courageously. We praise God for the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We witness your baptism, in the name of God: Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit.

The Celebration of Christian Baptism

First Lesson - Genesis 45:3-11, 15 - Lane McCulley, lay reader

Second Lesson - 1 Corinthians 15:35-38, 42-50

Anthem - “Beloved, Let Us Love One Another” -Van Denman Thompson

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God;

And everyone that loveth is begotten of God, and knoweth God.

Herein is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us

And sent his son to atone for our sins.

Beloved, if God so loved us we also ought to love one another.

If we love one another God abideth in us, and his love is made perfect in us.

God is love, and whoso abideth in love abideth in God and God abideth in them.

(The text is from 1 John 4.)

Gospel Lesson - Luke 6:27-38

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will

be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us

our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

Congregational Response - “Come and Find the Quiet Center”.................................beach spring

Come and find the quiet center in the crowded life we lead,

Find the room for hope to enter, find the frame where we are freed:

Clear the chaos and the clutter, clear our eyes, that we can see

All the things that really matter, be at peace, and simply be.

(The text is by Shirley Erena Murray.)
