  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Tomorrow is the first day of Spring which has always been a special day for me as March 20th was my mother’s birthday. So in honor of the first day of Spring, our theme today is the Spring.

  • Being that today is the last day of winter, we are going to start off with “Winter’s on the Wing” from The Secret Garden. The musical, A New Brain, is the autobiographical story of the composer’s desperate need for a brain operation. And coincidentally, one of the main characters has the same name as my mother’s. We will listen to the finale, “I Feel so Much Spring”. Then we are going to hear Andrea McArdle sing “It Might As Well Be Spring” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s State Fair. And finally in this set, singer-songwriter and performer extraordinaire, Peter Allen, will regale us with one of his final songs, “See You In the Springtime”, from his last album, Making Every Moment Count. Here’s “Winter’s on the Wing” from The Secret Garden.

  • Our theme today is Spring and you just heard “Winter’s on the Wing” from The Secret Garden, “I Feel so Much Spring” from A New Brain, Andrea McArdle with “It Might As Well Be Spring” from State Fair, and singer-songwriter Peter Allen with “See You In the Springtime”.

  • With spring comes more hours of sunshine and warmth. We are going to open our second set with the playful opening of the 2019 Broadway revival of Oklahoma!, “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning”. As already stated, this version is more playful than normally sung. We will then jump to two songs from the 2013 revival of Pippin, “Spread a Little Sunshine” and “Morning Glow”, both taken out of context for our purposes today. Here’s Oh, What a Beautiful Morning”.

  • You just heard “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” from the 2019 revival of Oklahoma! And “Spread a Little Sunshine” and “Morning Glow” both from the 2013 revival of Pippin as we celebrate tomorrow’s start of Spring today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz!” on [station ID]. We are celebrating tomorrow’s first day of Spring and another aspect of spring is the onset of much needed rain. Who hasn’t splashed around in puddles emulating Gene Kelly in “Singin’ In the Rain” and we are going to start off this third set with that iconic number. In 1962, Barbra Streisand recorded a live performance album, Live At The Bon Soir, that was intended to be her debut album.  This was 2 years before Funny Girl.  It was rediscovered, remastered, and released this past fall. On it, she sings “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” from The Fantasticks. Then we will hear the tragic “A Little Fall Of Rain” from Les Miserables. And our final rain song will be “Walking in the Rain” from Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Here’s Gene Kelly “Singin’ In the Rain”.

  • Spring starts tomorrow and you just heard Gene Kelly “Singin’ In The Rain”, Barbra Streisand with “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” from her recently released “debut” album, Live At The Bon Soir, “A Little Fall Of Rain” from Les Miserables, and “Walking in the Rain” from Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

  • We are celebrating tomorrow’s first day of spring today on “well, That’s Show Biz!” and we are going to end our show with two satirical songs. The first by Harvard math professor and song satirist Tom Lehrer and the second by the great Mel Brooks. I am not going to tell you the songs until afterward. Remember that this is satire and in no way am I actually espousing either of these beliefs or practices. Here’s Tom Lehrer.

  • You just heard Tom Lehrer’s “Poisoning Pigeons In The Park” and Mel Brook’s “Springtime for Hitler / Heil Myself” from his Broadway production of The Producers as we close out this Spring edition of “well, That’s Show Biz!”.
