  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • You just heard Julie Andrews with “The Lusty Month of May” from Camelot as we start off the month of May with the first show in a series of shows based on The Seven Deadly Sins. The Seven Sins, in no particular order, are Lust, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, Envy, and Pride. Each show, which we will present throughout the year, will be based on one of these sins, and we are starting off with the sin of Lust. Why Lust? Well, to be frank, it’s the easiest one to create set lists for as it is a main theme in almost every show. I could do several shows with this specific sin as a theme.

  • We are going to start off this set with Omar Sharif and Barbra Streisand singing the seductive “You Are Woman, I Am Man” from the movie soundtrack of Funny Girl.  Then, we find out that it is better to be “Happy in the Morning” from Woman Of The Year. And finally, Susan Sarandon pleads “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me” from the soundtrack of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Here’s “You Are Woman, I Am Man” from Funny Girl.

  • You just heard “You Are Woman, I Am Man” from Funny Girl, “Happy in the Morning” from Woman Of The Year, an “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show as we look at the Deadly Sin of LUST this week on “well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • This is the first in a series of shows based on The Seven Deadly Sins and we are looking at the sin of LUST today. Starting off this set, we have Gloria Grahame singing “I Cain’t Say No” from the movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!.  Then, Stephen Sondheim wrote a song that was cut out of Follies and used in the show Marry Me A Little called “Can That Boy Foxtrot!”; Foxtrot being a euphemism for another F-word. Normally the song is sung by a woman but I have found a few versions sung by men. This delightful version is by Jeff Harnar from his album I Know Things Now (My Life in Sondheim’s Words). And finally, you cannot convince me that the great Cole Porter did NOT know what he was doing when he wrote the song “Tom, Dick, or Harry” for his show Kiss Me, Kate!. You’ll understand what I mean when you hear it. Here’s “I Cain’t Say No” from Oklahoma!.

  • Today is the first in a series of shows looking at The Seven Deadly Sins and we are looking at the sin of LUST today.

  • In Stephen Sondheim’s musical, Sweeney Todd, the theme of LUST can be found embedded in its core. We are going to hear two songs from Sweeney. The first has Angela Lansbury singing Sweeney’s backstory in the song “Poor Thing” as she tells Sweeney that after Judge Turpin sent Sweeney to a penal colony, he then used his wiles to lure Sweeney’s wife, who he had lusted after, to a party under false pretenses. The second song is Judge Turpin’s version of the song “Johanna”, which was cut from Sweeney during previews which I had the privilege to see. The judge eventually adopts Sweeney’s daughter but his lust for her is graphically told in this song. Here are “Poor Thing” and “Johanna” from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

  • You just heard “Poor Thing” and Judge Turpin’s “Johanna”{ both from Sweeney Todd, but Judge Turpin’s “Johanna” was cut during previews, as we look at the Deadly Sin of Lust today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

Next we will hear the song “Two Ladies” from the 1998 revival of Cabaret. And we are going to conclude with Nathan Lane and Company singing “Along Came Bialy'' from Mel Brooks’ The Producers.  Here’s Dolly.
