  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • June is Pride Month and it is important to shout it to the rooftops. It was typical back in the 1960s for the New York City police to indiscriminately raid gay bars. On June 28th, 1969, they aggressively raided the Stonewall Inn. On that particular night, the patrons, most of them drag queens, had had enough and started fighting back from the abuse. There were many more protests and demonstrations in the weeks that followed, the gay community demanding the right to live openly and without fear of arrest. One year after this initial Stonewall Riot, as it had come to be called, the first Gay Pride marches were held in several cities. Today, Pride events are held every year to honor the Stonewall Riots and in 2016, The Stonewall Inn was designated as a National Monument. Today is our second annual Pride show to honor those who fought for the right to live freely.

  • We are going to open the first set with a pair of songs from the musical Avenue Q, a show that used puppets. One pair of puppets were similar to the Muppets, Bert and Ernie, named Nickie and Rod with Rod being a closeted gay conservative secretly in love with Nickiw. The first song is “If You Were Gay” and the second “Fantasies Come True” where Rod is dreaming that Nickie is talking in his sleep. Here’s Avenue Q.

  • We are celebrating Pride Month today on “well, That’s Show Biz!” and you just heard “If You Were Gay” and “Fantasies Come True” both from the Broadway musical Avenue Q. Next, we are going to hear two songs from the Broadway musical The Prom. The Prom is about four Broadway actors that travel to a conservative town in Indiana to help a lesbian student who was banned from bringing her girlfriend to her high school prom. We are going to hear two songs, “Dance With You” and “Love Thy Neighbor”. Here’s The Prom.

  • You just heard "Dance With You” and the rollicking “Love Thy Neighbor” both from The Prom as we celebrate Pride Month on this edition of “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • We are going to start off our next Pride Month set with Luke Evans singing “Stranger in This World” from the Broadway musical Taboo, based on the life of Boy George with lyrics by Boy George. If the name Luke Evans sounds familiar, he played Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit and Gaston in Disney”s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast among many other roles. Then we will hear the song “Ring Of Keys” from the Tony Award winning musical Fun Home. Based on a graphic memoir, Fun Home is the story of the author’s discovery of her own sexuality and her relationship with her closeted gay father. It was the first Broadway musical with a lesbian protagonist. And we will conclude this set with the song “Inner White Girl” from the Tony winning musical A Strange Loop. The show is about a Black queer man, writing a musical about a Black queer man writing a musical. A strange loop indeed. Here’s Luke Evans with “Stranger in This World” from Taboo.

  • And this is our second annual show dedicated to pride month. For our next set, we are going to hear from singer/songwriter Peter Allen. First, the show The Boy From Oz starred Hugh Jackman as Peter Allen which used Peter Allen’s songs to tell his life story. In the show, Peter Allen’s song “Not the Boy Next Door” is used to express Peter Allen’s discovery of his sexuality after his marriage to Liza Minnelli. Then, Peter Allen wrote and starred in the musical Legs Diamond. Prior to it’s opening, Allen would sing many of the songs that he was writing for the show in his concerts. We are going to hear one of them, “All I Wanted Was the Dream” from his Live at Carnegie Hall album.  Here’s Hugh Jackman as Peter Allen with “Not the Boy Next Door” from The Boy From Oz.

  • You just heard Hugh Jackman with “Not the Boy Next Door” from The Boy From Oz and Peter Allen singing “All I Wanted Was the Dream” originally from Legs Diamond as we celebrate Pride Month today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • And now for our last set. Today the LGBTQ community is under attack by far right extremists who insist on lying to the public. The attacks have been especially targeted toward the Trans and Drag Queen communities. This set is going to showcase those communities and I offer up a little advice. Don’t mess with Drags Queens. They are wonderful and fierce. Remember, it was Drag Queens that initiated the Stonewall Riots. First up, we are going to hear George Hearn with “A Little More Mascara” from La Cage Aux Folles. Then we are going to hear Neil Patrick Harris sing “Wig In a Box” from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. And finally, the Drag Queens save the the day and save the shoe factory in the musical Kinky Boots. We will hear the rousing finale, “Raise You Up / Just Be”.  Here’s “A Little More Mascara” from La Cage.

  • You just heard “A Little More Mascara” from La Cage Aux Folles, “Wig In a Box” from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and “Raise You Up / Just Be” from Kinky Boots as we conclude our celebration of Pride Month. But it is a false conclusion as no Pride Month would be complete without Jerry Herman’s “Pride Anthem” from La Cage. Here’s George Hearn with “I Am What I Am”.

  • And with “I Am What I Am” from Jerry Herman’s La Cage Aux Folles we conclude our Pride Month Celebration on “well, That’s Show Biz!”. If you would like to be a part of a future show, send your theme and song suggestions to me at wruushowbiz@gmail.com and please contact the station at WRUU.org and let them know how much you enjoyed today’s show.  See you next week.
