  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • This is the third of a series of shows that we started back in May based on the Seven Deadly Sins. The first two shows highlighted the sins of Lust and Pride. Today we look at the sin of Sloth, Laziness. This was perhaps the hardest of the Seven Deadly Sins to find songs for.  I had to stretch the meaning to songs that dealt with tangential ideas such as sleepiness, ease, and missed chances. Also songs that had that lazy feel to them. The other problem I had was choosing songs that wouldn’t put you to sleep. Sloth can do that.

  • We are going to start off our Sin of Sloth show with the live version of “Lazy” from David Byrne’s and Talking Head’s Broadway concert, American Utopia. Then we are going to hear Keith Carradine singing “I’m Easy” from the movie soundtrack of Nashville. Then, we will go to Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond singing “All The Wasted Time” from this year’s Tony Award winning revival of a musical, Parade. And we will conclude this set with Nick Cordero singing the Hoagy Carmichael song “Up a Lazy River” from the musical Bullets Over Broadway. Here’s “Lazy” from American Utopia.

  • You just heard “Lazy” from American Utopia, “I’m Easy” from Nashville, “All The Wasted Time” from Parade, and “Up a Lazy River” from Bullets Over Broadway as we focus in on the Deadly Sin of Sloth today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • This is the third in a series of shows based on The 7 Deadly Sins and we are looking at Sloth today. Due to the fact that there are not many songs based on laziness, I had to spread out tangentially to songs that are related to sloth or to the feel of laziness.

  • Our second set opens with Angela Lansbury, as Mrs. Lovett, singing “Wait” from Sweeney Todd as she convinces Sweeney to be patient when exacting revenge. Then, Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics to Hoagy Carmichael’s song “Lazy Bones”. The version we are going to hear is by The Supremes. And we will close set two with Fred Astaire and Petula Clark singing “When the Idle Poor Become the Idle Rich” from the film version of Finian’s Rainbow. Here’s “Wait” from Sweeney Todd.

  • This is the third in a series of shows on The 7 Deadly Sins and we are looking today at Sloth, Laziness. Due to the lack of songs about Sloth, I had to spread out tangentially to synonyms and songs that had the feeling of Sloth.

  • To open our third set, Marlene Dietrich sang the song “The Laziest Gal in Town” in the Alfred Hitchcock movie, Stage Fright. We are going to hear her sing a Live version of this song. Next we will hear Bernadette Peters sing “Moonshine Lullaby” from Annie Get Your Gun. Then, the song “Joey, Joey, Joey” from The Most Happy Fella, has the feeling of Sloth although it is far from that. The character Joey is the foreman at Tony’s vineyard but is always moving on when he feels his job is done. And finally, we will hear Russ Tamblyn sing “Gee, Officer Krupke” from the film version of West Side Story. Here’s Marlene Dietrich with “The Laziest Girl in Town”.
