  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • This is the week between the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is a time for introspection and connecting with your spirituality. Spirituality is hard to define as there are multiple definitions and different meanings for different people. Spirituality can connect people to their religious beliefs or it can connect someone to their humanity. Today’s theme is Spirituality and I hope that in the songs that I have selected, I will have at least connected with your personal meaning of Spirituality. And for the third set, I will tell you of the time that I thought I had died and an angel was singing to me. But before I get to that, let’s open the first set on Spirituality.

  • Spirituality can connect us to all living things so we are going to open with the “Circle of Life” from the original movie version of Disney’s The Lion King. Next we will hear “Day by Day” from the 2011 Broadway cast recording of Godspell. Then we will go to the show Flora the Red Menace to hear Liza Minnelli sing about what it’s like to have a great experience in “A Quiet Thing”. And finally the great Stubby Kaye brings us “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” from the original Guys and Dolls. Here’s the spiritually attuned “Circle of Life”.

  • You just heard “Circle of Life” from The Lion King, “Day by Day” from Godspell, “A Quiet Thing” from Flora the Red Menace, and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” from Guys and Dolls as we explore Spirituality today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • We are exploring the different aspects of Spirituality today. For some people Spirituality connects people to their religious beliefs and to others it connects people to their humanity. We are going to open the second set with Ethel Merman with the London Festival Orchestra and Festival Chorus singing “Blow, Gabriel Blow” originally from Cole Porter’s Anything Goes. Then the magnificent Audra McDonald will implore us to “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” from The Sound of Music. And finally Ben Platt and Company will connect us with our humanity with “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen. Here’s Ethel Merman with “Blow Gabriel Blow”.

  • You just heard Ethel Merman sing “Blow, Gabriel Blow” originally from Anything Goes, Audra McDonald with “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” from The Sound of Music, and Ben Platt and Company sing “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen as we continue to explore our Spirituality.

  • And we are examining the different aspects that define Spirituality today. I said at the beginning of the show that I would tell you about the time that I thought I had died and an angel was singing to me. Well here is that story.

  • It was March of 1987 and I took a nap on my couch in front of the television. My sleep was deep and at some point during my dreaming I heard an angelic voice calling me home. My mind told me that I had died and an angel was singing to me. As I slowly regained consciousness, I realized that the angelic voice calling me home was coming from the television.  It was the news and the musical Les Miserables had just opened on Broadway. The reviewer was showing a clip from the show. It was a clip of Colm Wilkinson singing “Bring Him Home”. We are going to hear that song followed by John Rubenstein singing “Corner Of The Sky” from Pippin. And we will conclude this third Spiritual set with the cast of Into the Woods singing “No One Is Alone”. Here’s the angelic voice of Colm Wilkinson singing “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables that called to me out of my sleep.

  • You just heard ‘Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables, “Corner Of The Sky” from Pippin, and “No One Is Alone” from Into The Woods as we continue to explore the meaning of Spirituality on this edition of “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

Then Austin Pendleton exalts over the “Miracle of Miracles” from Fiddler On The Roof. Next, Donny Osmondlaments “Close Every Door” from Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and finally the cast of Rent sings about the “Seasons Of Love”. Here’s Sammy Davis, Jr. and the “Rhythm Of Life”.
