“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • I have been holding off on this theme for a while, waiting for an appropriate spot in the year. The theme is Foreign Cast Albums. The United States and England produce the most cast albums by far but sometimes another country will. I found some of these on streaming services but it was very difficult. Some that I found a while ago, I could not find when preparing for this show. And I am not including Canadian or Australian Cast albums because they are in English.

  • We are going to start with a show appropriate for Chanukah although it is a little of a cheat.  It is actually from a show that was produced Off-Broadway in 2018 but the show was performed entirely in Yiddish, the language of the Jews from Eastern Europe. We are going to hear the opening number, “Traditsye” from Fiddler on the Roof. Then we will hear “Es Mas Que Amor” from Jesucristo Superstar, the language being Spanish. You will know the song. And we will close with “Donna” from the Original Japanese Cast of Hair. Here’s “Traditsye” from the Yiddish Language version of Fiddler.

  • We are listening to Foreign Language Cast Albums today and you just heard “Traditsye”, Tradition, from Fiddler On The Roof, “Es Mas Que Amor”, the Spanish version of “I Don’t know How To Love Him” from Jesucristo Superstar, and the “Donna” from the Original Japanese Cast of Hair.

  • You are not imagining it. We are listening to Foreign Language Cast Albums today. Most countries do not record cast albums but a few have been recorded.

  • We are going to open our second set with “Wach’ auf, Argentinien” from the German production of Evita. In this production, the role of Che was sung by my cousin, Ethan Freeman. Then we are going to hear “Demain” from the original French recording of Les Miserables. And we will conclude this set with the title song from the German production of Haare.  Here is “A New Argentina” from Evita sung in its original German.

  • You just heard “Wach’ auf, Argentinien” from the German production of Evita, “Demain” from the French recording of Les Miserables, and the title song from the German production of Haare as we delve in Foreign Language Cast Recordings today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • We are listening today to Foreign Cast Recordings. There are not many but I did find a few. We are going to open set 3 with “The Bitch of Living” from the German production of Spring Awakening. Next we will hear “la Balada de Sweeney Todd” from : El Barber Diabolic del Carrer Fleet. This production is in Catalan which is spoken in Spain. And we will conclude this set with the French version of “Belle” from Disney’s La Belle et La Bete. Here’s “The Bitch of Living” from The German production of Spring Awakening.

  • We are going to start off our last set of Foreign Language Cast albums by revisiting the Off-Broadway Yiddish production of Fiddler on the Roof and the song “Lekhayim”. Then we will go back to the Japanese Cast Recording of “Hair” and listen to “Good Morning Starshine". "Gliddy Glub Gloopy" translates the same in any language.  And we will conclude with Antonio Banderas and the Spanish company of Company singing ‘Sentirse Vivo”. Here’s the Yiddish version of “Lekhayim”.

  • You just heard “Lekhayim” from the Yiddish version of Fiddler on the Roof, The Japanese version of “Good Morning Starshine” from Hair, and “Sentirse Vivo”, “Being Alive” from the Spanish version of Company. And that concludes today’s look into Foreign Language Cast Albums.
