  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • My sister-in-law made the suggestion of Dancing as a theme. I wasn’t quite sure dance music would work but after she sent me a couple of song suggestions, I realized she meant songs that mentioned dancing. I quickly made a list which included songs that mentioned a type of dance or started a dance craze.

  • So starting off our first set, we have Danny Kaye singing “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing” from the movie White Christmas. Next Barbra Streisand and company sing “Dancing” from the film version of Hello, Dolly!. Then we are going to hear the beautiful “Dance with You” from The Prom. And we will conclude with Donna McKechnie dancing to “The Music and the Mirror” from A Chorus Line. Here’s Danny Kaye.

  • We are looking at songs about Dancing today. In our last set we heard the classic song “The Music and the Mirror” from A Chorus Line. When making the god awful movie version, the powers that be felt they needed to replace that great song with this one “Let Me Dance for You”. You can hear echoes of the original song in this version. Then we will hear the title song to Do I Hear a Waltz?. And we will conclude this set with the dance number “Born to Hand-Jive” from Grease. Here’s the replacement song “Let Me Dance for You” from the film version of A Chorus Line.

  • Our theme today is songs about Dancing. We are going to open our third set with “Shall We Dance?” from The King and I. People think the dance is a waltz but it is a polka. Then, from the musical Me and My Girl, came the song “The Lambeth Walk” which became a dance in the 1920s. And we will conclude with Julie Andrews and company singing “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady. Here’s “Shall We Dance?”.

  • And now to conclude our show on Dancing, we are going to open with “Time Warp” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Next, the song “Ladies Choice” was a song added to the movie version of Hairspray. Ladies Choice was when the women at a dance could choose which man they wanted to dance with. Then, we will hear the classic dance number "Dancing In the Dark" from the film The Band Wagon where Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse dance in Central Park. And we will conclude with the cast of Mack & Mabel singing "Tap Your Troubles Away". Here’s “Time Warp”.
