  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • I began this show 2 years ago, the first Sunday in April, with the theme of Opening Numbers. Last year, on the first anniversary of the show, the theme was Finales, as was last week’s theme. Today, for my second anniversary show, we are going to go back to that original theme of Opening Numbers.

  • We are going to open with the opening number from the original Broadway cast recording of The Lion King. As we hear the opening sounds from “Circle of Life” we see the entrance of the innovative and magical puppets that make up the biodiversity of the African savannah. Next we will hear Donny Osmond sing “Any Dream Will Do”, the opening number from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Then the original cast of West Side Story brings us the “Jet Song”. And we will close the set with Marissa Jaret Winokur singing “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray. Here’s “Circle of Life” from The Lion King.

  • You just heard “Circle of Life” from The Lion King, “Any Dream Will Do” from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, “Jet Song” from West Side Story, and “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray as we listen to Opening Numbers today for the second anniversary of “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • We are listening to Opening Numbers today for my second anniversary show and we are going to begin Set 2 with a show and song that changed musical theater forever. Prior to this, shows usually opened with a chorus line.  Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! Was the first musical to blend comedy, drama, dance, and song where the songs were used to move the plot and not just be a break from the story. Imagine the first audiences to see a lone cowboy walking on to a cornfield set singing “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’”. We are going to hear Alfred Drake from the original 1943 production of Oklahoma!. Then we are going to hear Zero Mostel with “Comedy Tonight”, the opening number from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum. We will follow that with another Rodgers & Hammerstein opening number, “Dites-moi” from South Pacific. And we will close out the set with the opening number from Hair, “Aquarius”. Here’s the opening number, “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’”, from Oklahoma!.
