Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Songs with Names in the title is our theme today, it’s as simple as that.
We are going to open the first set with the song “Bloody Mary” from the film version of South Pacific. And from there we will hear Robert Preston sing about “Marian the Librarian” from the film version of The Music Man. The second act of A Day In Hollywood / A Night In The Ukraine, is a new Marx Brothers movie. So in the song, “Natasha”, think Groucho Marx and Margaret Dumont. And we will end the set with “Sherry” from The Jersey Boys. Here’s “Bloody Mary” from South Pacific.

Jerry Herman is famous for writing big show stoppers with the names of his title characters. Think, “Hello, Dolly! And “Mame”. We are going to hear the one he wrote for Mack & Mabel called “When Mabel Comes in the Room”. Then we are going to hear Martin Short and Bernadette Peters sing “Paula (An Improvised Love Song” from The Goodbye Girl. And we will finish this set with the Act II version of the song “Johanna” from Sweeney Todd as the sailor Anthony searches for Johanna while Sweeney bides his time murdering and Mrs Lovett disposes of the bodies. Here's “When Mabel Comes in the Room” from Mack & Mabel.

We are listening to songs with Names in the title today. It is interesting to note that many songs have the name Mary or a variation of Mary in their titles. We’ve already heard two of them in the first set, “Bloody Mary” and “Marian the Librarian”. This third set is going to be all Mary.
First up, how do you solve a problem like “Maria” from The Sound Of Music. We will follow that with “Rosemary” from How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Then we will hear about “Marianne” from The Grand Tour. And we will finish with the ultimate, “Maria” from West Side Story. But first, here’s “Maria” from The Sound Of Music.
