You are listening to [Station ID].
Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and so this is our third annual recognition of the holiday with our theme of Empowerment. Every song selection is empowering in some way as Martin Luther King Jr. supported many marginalized groups and struggles.
We are going to start off with the song “Run, Freedom, Run! From Urinetown. We are going to follow that with the song “I’ve Gotta Be Me” originally from the show Golden Rainbow which starred Steve Lawrence. I played his version once before but the one who truly made a hit of this song was Sammy Davis Jr. We are going to hear his Live version. Then we will hear “Better Be Good to Me” from Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. And we will conclude this first set on Empowerment with “Do You Hear the People Sing?” from Les Miserables. Here’s “Run, Freedom, Run!” from Urinetown.

“I’ll Be Here Tomorrow”, sung by Joel Gray, from Jerry Herman’s The Grand Tour is a song about a Jewish man escaping from the Nazis. Many have said that this song should have become an Anthem for Jews as Herman’s “I Am What I Am” from La Cage Aux Folles became an Anthem for the LBGTQ community. After that we are going to hear Glynis Johns sing “Sister Suffragette” from Mary Poppins. Not too long ago women had to fight for the right to vote. We will follow that with Brian Stokes Mitchell declaring “Make Them Hear You” from Ragtime. And we will end the set with the Newsies forming a Union and going on strike with “Seize The Day”. Here’s “I’ll Be Here Tomorrow” from Jerry Herman’s The Grand Tour.
