March 18, 2025: Solidarity
On this episode, host Barbara Humphrey talked about solidarity, inspired by a VoR conversation with Elder Nat Williams on 3/11/25 and his incredible efforts to bring tenants at Yamacraw housing together to form a resident council and the community together to both support the resident council and the larger issue of affordable housing and community development. Savannah's solidarity around the St. Patrick's Day celebration was also discussed--the prep, the day, the clean-up.
Examples of past and current solidarity around other issues were also discussed, including labor solidarity during the Industrial Revolution; anti-war movements of the 1910s, 1930s, 1960s, and in 2003 prior to the USA invasion of Iraq; solidarity around issues of civil rights and justice, community neighborhood gardening in Savannah and elsewhere, the Montgomery bus boycott and Memphis sanitation strike during the time of MLK, climate change, grief, and, today, the genocide in Palestine and deportation of people without legal status in the USA.
It was suggested that we all need to seek commonality with those around us--that there is strength in numbers--to accomplish our goals.
