Tonight on Evening Eclectic I am talking with saxophonist Owen Broder about his Hodges: Front and Center project which shines light on the legendary yet still undersung saxophone titan Johnny Hodges. Hodges is more often celebrated as a key sideman with the Duke Ellington Orchestra than as a distinctive and influential voice in his own right. As part of this project, Owen has released two albums Hodges: Front and Center and Hodges: Front and Center, Vol. 2 both on Outside In Records, and produced an online course “The Music of Johnny Hodges”. And Owen will be the featured performer at the Savannah Jazz Duke Ellington 126th Birthday Tribute next Sunday, April 27th at 5:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Harborside Ballroom.
