May 6, 2025: Cinco de Mayo defeat over Western Exploitation
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla, MX, in 1862, 41 years after the Mexicans defeated their Spanish colonizers to gain their independence. It is a relatively insignificant holiday in Mexico and an excuse to drink tequila and mezcal in the USA. Voices of Reason and Resistance hosts Two and Barbara celebrated Cinco de Mayo by discussing the western European and USA exploitation of the global south, and in the rest of the world, initially via sanctification by the Catholic Church and then by the military might of the colonizers and conquistidors.
Sadly, this is more than a history lesson. It is a story about today and the continuing colonization, conquest, and financial indebtedness via the IMF of countries around the world. A story that needs to be told to stop the exploitation that further enriches the rich and impoverishes the poor.
Join us next week as we pay tribute to the real Mothers' Day--a day to celebrate peace so that mothers everywhere are not burying their sons (and now daughters) as victims of war.
