Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show was pre-recorded.
Even though today is July 6th, it is still the July 4th weekend. So today our theme is Americana, songs about the American experience.
We are going to open with “The Egg” from the musical 1776, a song about the Declaration of Independence. We will then go to a song about a traditional American eating experience, “A Real Nice Clambake” from the musical Carousel. And we will complete this set with two songs with a similar theme. First, “The Great Come-And-Get-It Day” from the film version of Finian’s Rainbow in which the townspeople imagine ordering purchases from a mail order catalog. And then we are going to hear about “The Wells Fargo Wagon” from the film version of The Music Man as the townspeople await the coming of their mail order purchases. Here is “The Egg” from 1776.

For our next set of Americana, we are going to open with the song “Corn” from the musical Shucked about the all-American grain called…corn. We will then stay with this agriculture theme and hear the song “Joey, Joey, Joey” from The Most Happy Fella as vineyard foreman Joey sings about moving on. And we will close this set with “The Farmer and the Cowman” from the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!. Here’s “Corn”.
