Love is the spirit of this program. The music spans many genres but has unifying themes of justice, love, learning and hope. The messages come from podcasts, sermons and readings from Unitarian-Universalist and other allied sources in liberal religion. The title of this program comes from the words of a beloved Unitarian-Universalist hymn, “Spirit of Life,” including, “Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion” and “Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.”
The song "Women Planting Trees" is about Wangari Maathai, an internationally renowned Kenyan environmental political activist and the recipient of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize.

Today in Catholic and some Anglican churches is the Feast of the Divine Mercy. The Sunday after Easter, the holiday venerates an image of Christ reportedly seen by a Polish nun, later St. Faustina Kowalska, in 1931. It also venerates the notion of Divine Mercy, which is asking for God’s mercy, Christ’s mercy and the ability to show mercy to others.
Today is Easter in Orthodox or Eastern Churches, such as those in Russia and Greece. Western churches celebrated Easter last week. The date difference derives from how the two great Christian divisions mark their church calendars. In the East, the holiday is called Pascha. Other slight differences include worship style and emphasis in meaning.
Thursday in the Jewish faith is Yom HaShoa, also called Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day, we remember that from 1941 to 1945, Nazi Germany and its accomplices carried out the largest genocide in human history, killing approximately six million Jews and others. It’s a reminder of what comes from hate, fear and the politics of nationalism.
Friday in the Muslim faith is Isra and Mi’raj, marking an event in which Allah took Mohammad on a night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and then to heaven, where Mohammad talked to prophets and received instruction on Islamic prayer. Customs around the holiday include decorating homes or communities with candles or electric lights, lighting buildings, sharing foods and gathering at mosques for prayer.
Saturday is the first full moon of spring, which makes it a New Year’s Day in many cultures in South Asia. Traditions vary by nation, ethnicity and religion. Among them…
In Thailand, Buddhists on Friday will celebrate Songkran by visiting local temples and offering food to monks as an act of making merit, a fundamental concept in Buddhist ethics. Other acts of merit-making Friday may include releasing captive birds, washing the hands of elders or cleaning Buddha statues. Festive water fights are also common.
In Sikhism, Saturday is Vaisaki, marking the birth of the Sihk order after the persecution and execution of Guru Tegh Bahadur for refusing to convert to Islam under the orders of a Mughal emperor. On Vaisaki, Sikhs will decorate their houses of worship, sing, tell stories, hold processions and gather to socialize and eat festive foods.
And in Hinduism, Tamil cultures on Saturday will celebrate Puthandu, observed as a family time. People prepare a tray with fruits, flowers and auspicious items, light up the family altar and visit temples. People will don new clothes and eat vegetarian feasts.
