“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • You are listening to [Station ID].

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Today’s show was pre-recorded.

  • This is my birthday week so, to help celebrate, I thought I would play a few of my favorite songs from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers. These selections are just SOME of my favorites and are in no particular order. They represent songs that I have sung, would like to sing, or just love. And if you would like to hear some of your favorites, you can send me your list of about 15 songs to me at wruushowbiz@gmail.com

  • The first half of today’s show will focus on the composer Stephen Sondheim.

  • We are going to start with three songs from his show Follies. First we are going to hear the polyphonic song “You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow / Love Will See Us Through”. This is a song with two different melodies sung by four voices that eventually are woven together. The second song has the great Elaine Stritch singing “Broadway Baby”. Both of these songs are from the 1985 New York Philharmonic Concert Cast Recording. And the third song from Follies that I’ve selected has Imelda Staunton singing “Losing My Mind”. Listen carefully to this version as it really shows why people connect with and love to sing Sondheim.  Here’s three songs from Stephen Sondheim’s Follies.

  • You just heard three of My Favorite Songs from Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, the polyphonic song “You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow / Love Will See Us Through”, Elaine Stritch singing “Broadway Baby”, and Imelda Staunton singing “Losing My Mind”.

  • I’m playing some of My Favorite Songs today to start off my birthday week and next we have the song “Giants In The Sky” from Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods. This was the song I sang to myself after Sterphen Sondheim passed away based on its title. I will follow that with the song that I have often meditated upon, “Move On” from Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George. When listening to this song, focus on the profound lyrics and the glorious harmonies he creates. Here’s “Giants In The Sky” from Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods.

  • You just heard two of My Favorite songs, Stephen Sondheim’s “Giants In The Sky” from Into The Woods and “Move On” from Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George.

  • One last song from Sondheim, a song that had some people leaving the theater at intermission. This satirical song blends humor with horror as Mrs Lovett comes up with the idea of what to do with the dead bodies that Sweeney Todd produces. Here’s “A Little Priest” from Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

  • You just heard  one of My Favorite Songs, “A Little Priest” from Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The movie version does a terrible job with this song removing all of its humor and satire by treating the puns not as a clever game by the characters but as real people that they see out the window.

  • This next set consists of three random songs that I like. First, “I Rise Again” from On The Twentieth Century. This is a role I would love to play by the way. Then, the haunting “Moonfall” from The Mystery of Edwin Drood. And finally the jazz inspired “One of the Great Ones” from A Bronx Tale. Here’s “I Rise Again” from On The Twentieth Century.

  • And now for today’s final set of some of my favorite songs to celebrate my birthday week. These are 4 very dramatic songs by three incomparable performers.

  • First we have Liza Minnelli singing “Maybe This Time” from the film version of Cabaret. This was a song originally written by Kander and Ebb for Kaye Ballard but Liza asked for it to be put into the film version of Cabaret and she makes it her own. We will follow that with Peter Allen performing his song “All I Wanted Was the Dream” originally from his musical Legs Diamond. Then we will hear Judy Garland perform “What Now My Love”. And we will close with Liza Minnelli again, performing “But the World Goes Round” originally from the film New York, New York. Here’s Liza Minnelli singing “Maybe This Time” from the film version of Cabaret.
