October 28, 2025: To Vote or Not
Voices of Resistance hosts, Robo, Apollo and Barbara talked about the upcoming election and voting. It was pointed out that the Constitution is relatively silent on voting, other than setting minimal qualifications for President and Members of Congress and Senators, or political parties. The Federalist Paper #10, written by James Madison, discourages parties as "factions" because elected officials should represent the entire citizenry, while we are on Day #28 of a government shutdown with divisions along party lines, while more than 50% of the USA electorate support its end.
It was pointed out that voting is one tool to change policies and practices, but perhaps not the most effective tool. Other tools include showing up and getting active, particularly at the local, community level, to advocate for what we believe are needed by the people--affordable housing, public transit, living wage jobs, infrastructure, good schools and more. Another strategy is to remind elected officials via letters, visits to their offices, and your presence at their events to hold them accountable to fulfill their promises made on the campaign trail.
There are many issues before us in Savannah at this time, including the fight to retain affordable public housing at Yamacraw Village, improve public transit availability, and support our public schools.
