“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

11-23-2025

  • You are listening to [Station ID].

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Today’s show was pre-recorded.

  • I am thinking about doing a series of shows that focus on a different emotion. Today’s show is all about the emotion of Joy. I will be playing songs that bring out the emotion of joy in me and I hope that you will feel joy from these songs as well. To help you to feel joy when you hear these songs, I am not going to announce these songs in advance so as not to influence your emotions.

  • So let’s begin with this first four song set of songs to stir the emotion of Joy.

  • <Set 1>

  • Did those songs make you feel Joy? You just heard Zachary Levi sing the title song to the 2016 revival of She Loves Me. Next we heard Lauren Bacall singing “But Alive” from Applause, the musical version of the film All About Eve. Then we heard my cousin, Ethan Freeman, sing “Almost Like Being in Love”  from Brigadoon. And we finished with Judy Garland performing “Get Happy” originally from her film Summer Stock.

  • <PSA>

  • We are playing songs that hopefully fill your heart and soul with Joy today. So to let you experience Joy from the outset of each song, I am not going to reveal the names of the songs until after you’ve heard them.

  • This next set is a five song set. I hope these songs bring you Joy.

  • <Play Set 2>

  • There’s Joy to be found in each of these songs and I hope you found it. First you heard “The Joint Is Jumpin’” from Ain’t Misbehavin’. Next you heard Julie Andrews describing “A Lovely Night” she experienced in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. We followed that with Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh suggesting we “Put On a Happy Face” from the film version of Bye Bye Birdie. Then Mary Martin, as Peter Pan, gleefully shouts “I’m Flying” as she teaches the Darling children how to fly. And finally, Mitzi Gaynor as Ensign Nellie Forbush declares “I’m In Love With a Wonderful Guy” from the film version of South Pacific.

  • Stay tuned for more Joyful songs today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • Today’s show is about the emotion of Joy. Every song today elicits the feeling of Joy in me and I hope it brings out the Joy in you as well. So that we can concentrate on our emotions rather than our intellect, I am not going to announce the songs in advance. Just feel the Joy.

  • So let’s continue with three songs in Set 3.

  • <Set 3>

  • Did those songs make you feel Joyous?

  • You just heard “Everybody Rejoice” from The Wiz as they celebrate the liquidation of the Wicked Witch of the West. Then a very different form of Joy as Julie Andrews and company sing “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady. And finally, Liza Minnelli performed “Ring Them Bells” from the Live television concert Liza with a ‘Z’”.

  • Here’s our last set of Joy.

  • <Set 4>

  • Did those songs make you feel Joy?

  • You just heard Aaron Tveit sing “I’m Alive” from Next To Normal, followed by the finale from the film version of the musical Hairspray, “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. And finally we heard a very different song of Joy, the finale from You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, “Happiness”, which concludes today’s show on the emotion of Joy.
