November 11, 2025: Armistice Day Celebrating Peacemakers
This broadcast, on the 11th day of the 11th hour at 11 am celebrates Armistice Day, the day the armistice ending WWI was signed. Co-hosts Opollo, Rojo, Rose and Barbara used this opportunity to celebrate the holiday as it was initially intended--to celebrate peace.
Beginning with Aristophanes, whose Greek comic play presented a sex strike by women of the city states of Athens and Sparta to deny men the pleasures of the flesh to end the constant wars and negotiate peace. Robo discussed Ismael Guadalupe Ortiz, who fought for the right of his Viequense brothers against the US Navy for occupying their land as a training site, dislocating (and often abusing and murdering the residents) and leaving behind unexploded ordnance. After 60 years of occupation, the Navy finally left Vieques on 5/1/2003.
Opollo talked about Rachel Corrie, a young woman from the USA who was crushed by an IDF bulldozer while trying the prevent the illegal demolition of Palestinian homes. Not surprisingly, her death was misreported as an accident. We acknowledged that so many peacemakers are demonized while so many heralded as peacemakers were not.
The USA changed the name of this holiday in 1954 to Veterans Day, presumably to honor veterans of all wars and conflicts, but in reality, to use it as a military recruitment tool, as is certainly the case with the Savannah Veterans Day Parade.
