Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show was pre-recorded.
Tomorrow is Dr. Martin Luther King jr.’s birthday and so we are celebrating with the theme of Empowerment.
<Play “Do You Hear The People Sing?”>
You just heard “Do You Hear The People Sing?” from Les Miserables.
Dr. King supported and championed disenfranchised causes and groups that faced second-class status in this country. In this first set we are going to focus on women’s rights.
We are going to start off with the song “Freedom” from Shenandoah. Then we will hear “The March (We Demand Equality)” from Suffs, a show about the suffragette movement, giving women the right to vote. We will follow that with “Sister Suffragette” from Mary Poppins. And we will conclude this set with “I Ain’t Down Yet” from The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Here’s “Freedom” from Shenandoah.
