Stephen Sondheim understood and wrote songs about the human condition. Humans are a nervous species, full of Angst. Most of his characters arrive fully formed and filled with anxiety. We are going to close the show with just three examples. First we are going to hear Mandy Patinkin sing about “The Right Girl” from the 1985 New York Philharmonic Concert version of Follies. Then Mandy Patinkin again, this time as painter George Seurat, singing about “Finishing the Hat” from Sunday in the Park with George. And then Imelda Staunton, filled with Angst, sings “Losing My Mind” from the 2018 London National Theater Cast Recording of Follies. Here’s “The Right Girl” from Follies. Feel the Angst.
Did you feel the Angst in Sondheim’s songs? You just heard “The Right Girl” from Follies, “Finishing the Hat” from Sunday in the Park with George, and the crushing “Losing My Mind” from Follies.
