Today is our 5th annual Rodgers & Hammerstein celebration. For this set, we are going to highlight the lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II before he collaborated with Richard Rodgers.
We are going to begin with two songs from the operetta The New Moon which he created with composer Sigmund Romberg. First “Stouthearted Men” followed by “Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise”. Next we will hear a song originally written by Kalmar and Ruby for, but not used in, the Marx Brothers film A Night at The Opera. Hammerstein then took the lyrics and adapted them for a new song called “A Kiss to Build a Dream On” which was recorded by Louis Armstrong. We are going to hear that recording. We will then end the set with “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” from Showboat. Here is “Stouthearted Men” from The New Moon.
