Tony Awards 2026

“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

6-07-2026

  • You are listening to [Station ID].

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Tonight is the Tony Awards ceremony and, as is our custom, today we will be presenting songs from the Best Musical nominees, Best Original Score nominees, and Best Revival nominees.

  • Now before we start, I want to say that I do not think this was a good year for musicals and as we go through these nominations, I think you will understand my opinion.

  • First up are the nominees for Best Musical. The first of the four nominees is The Lost Boys based on the teenage vampire movie of the same name. Here is the song “Belong to Someone”.

  • You just heard the song “Belong to Someone” from the Best Musical nominated show, The Lost Boys. By the way, there is yet to be a cast album recorded for this show. This excerpt is from The Lost Boys, Santa Carla Sessions.

  • The next Tony nominated musical is Schmigadoon! Based on the Apple+ TV series. Once again, there is no Broadway cast recording. Here is the title song from Schmigadoon!.

  • You just heard the title song from Schmigadoon!, our second Best Musical nominee.

  • Our third Best Musical nominee is Titanique, based on the movie Titanic but from the point of view of Celine Dion and using songs that she recorded. Again, there is no cast recording but it is because of the difficulty in gaining the rights to all these different songs. Here is Celine Dion singing one of the songs featured in the show, “River Deep, Mountain High”.

  • You just heard “River Deep, Mountain High”, just one of the songs featured in the juke box musical Titanique.

  • The final Best Musical nominee is Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York). This original show is about two very different people who bond during a two day adventure to a parent’s wedding. Here is the opening song “New York”.

  • You just heard the song “New York” from our final Best Musical nominee Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York). And there is a cast album for this show. I hope this show wins for the sole reason that of the four nominated shows, this one is the most original.

  • Stick around for songs from the Best Original Score nominees.

  • We just played songs from each of the shows nominated for Best Musical at tonight’s Tony Award Ceremony. For this set, we will present songs from the musicals nominated for Best Original Score.

  • Now you are going to really find out how poor this season of musicals was. Two of the nominations for Best Original Score went to two straight plays, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. They even added a caveat, (Music and/or Lyrics) so as to include these two plays in the nominations. Are you telling me there were not enough qualified original musicals to make the cut?

  • The other three nominees for Best Original Score are The Lost Boys, Schmigadoon!, and Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York). Here are songs from these shows. First, from The Lost Boys, is “Wild”. Next, from Schmigadoon!, is the song “Lover’s Spat”. And finally, from Two Strangers, is the song “What’ll It Be”.

  • You just heard the songs “Wild” from The Lost Boys, “Lover’s Spat” from Schmigadoon!, and “What’ll It Be” from Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York), the musicals nominated for Best Original Score at tonight’s Tony Awards ceremony.

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Shakespeare” on [Station ID].

  • Tonight is the Tony Awards and we’ve already discussed the nominees for Best Musical and Best Original Score.  Before we play songs from the Best Revival of a Musical, I want to play songs from two Musicals that got snubbed.

  • First is a show that at least could have been nominated for Best Original Score. The Queen of Versailles featured music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and starred Kristin Chenoweth and F. Murray Abraham. It was based on a documentary about a beauty queen who wanted to build the largest home in the United States. Here are the songs “Trust Me” and “This Is Not the Way”.

  • You just heard the songs “Trust Me” and “This Is Not the Way” from The Queen of Versailles.

  • Another musical that was Tony snubbed, this time for Best Revival, was the musical Chess. Here are the songs “One Night In Bangkok” and “Nobody’s Side” from the 2025 Revival of Chess.

  • You just heard the songs “One Night In Bangkok” and “Nobody’s Side” from the Tony snubbed 2025 Revival of Chess.

  • For our last set we are going to play songs from the three shows nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.

  • The first show is Cats: The Jellicle Ball. Since there is no cast album, we will hear Betty Buckley sing “Memory” from the original production of Cats. Then we will hear “Wheels of a Dream” from the 2025 revival of Ragtime. And the third show nominated for Best Revival of a Musical is Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, and since there is no cast album, we will hear “The Time Warp” from the Original Roxy Cast of The Rocky Horror Show. Here is Betty Buckley and “Memory”.

  • You just heard “Memory” from the original production of Cats, “Wheels of a Dream” from the 2025 revival of Ragtime, and “The Time Warp” from the Original Roxy Cast of The Rocky Horror Show; three songs from the Tony nominated Best Revival of a Musical.

  • That concludes today’s show highlighting tonight’s Tony Awards ceremony.
