“I won’t stay hidden anymore. I’m who I am. And I think that’s worth fighting for. And nobody out there gets to define the life I’m meant to lead with this unruly heart of mine”.
Those were the concluding lyrics to the song you just heard, “Unruly Heart” from The Prom about a high school girl trying to go to prom with her girl friend.
June is Pride Month, a month for the LGBTQ+ community to declare we “won’t stay hidden anymore” and we won’t let you define us.
Today’s show highlights many aspects of the LGBTQ+ community and will contain several anthems such as “Unruly Heart”.
For our first set, we begin with “Keep It Gay” from The Producers. Then we will hear Stephen Sondheim’s only gay love song, “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened” from Road Show. And we will end with “A Little More Mascara” from Jerry Herman’s La Cage Aux Folles. Here’s “Keep It Gay” from The Producers.

June is Pride Month and we are playing songs that cover many aspects of the LGBTQ+ community.
For this set, we are going to cover singer/songwriter, performer, and gay icon Peter Allen who passed away from AIDS related throat cancer on June 18, 1992. In the 1960’s he was married to Liza Minnelli and was Judy Garland’s son-in-law but the marriage ended due to his sexuality and they remained good friends til his death.
We are first going to hear him sing “Sure Thing Baby” from his musical Legs Diamond. Then we will hear Hugh Jackman,as Peter Allen, sing “Not the Boy Next Door” from the juke box musical about the life of Peter Allen, The Boy from Oz. And finally we will hear Peter Allen sing the song he wrote for his lover who was dying from AIDS. His lover had become his lighting designer and this is referenced at the end of the song in the lyric “you are the light that shines on me”. The song is “Once Before I Go” from his album Not the Boy Next Door. Here is Peter Allen.
