• Today, the third Sunday in July is Sundae Sunday, Sundae as in ice cream Sundae, and you just heard the song “Ice Cream” from the musical She Loves Me.

• There aren’t many ice cream sundae songs so we are expanding the theme to include all things sweet. For this first set, we start with the Jule Styne/Robert Merrill title song to Sugar, their musicalized version of the movie Some Like It Hot. Then we will hear Christian Borle sing “The Candy Man” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And we will end the set with Anna Maria Alberghetti singing “Beautiful Candy” from Carnival. We start this set with the song “Ice Cream” from the first Broadway musical that I remember seeing on Broadway, Anne Of Green Gables. Next we will hear “Truly Scrumptious” from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Then we will hear the title song from Cy Coleman’s Sweet Charity. We will follow that with “Sugar” from Jonathan Larson’s tick, tick…BOOM!. And we will close out the set with Julie Andrews and “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins. Then we will hear Imelda Staunton, as Mrs. Lovett, sing about “The Worst Pies In London” from Sweeney Todd. Speaking of Sweeney, when I first heard Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury sing “A Little Priest”, and my lightbulb went on at about the same time as Sweeney’s, I realized the genius of Stephen Sondheim. Here’s “What Baking Can Do” from Waitress.

In his semi-autobiographical musical tick,tick…BOOM, Jonathan Larson paid homage to Stephen Sondheim with his version of “Sunday”.
