August 4, 2026: The Dark Days and the Resistance

Unfortunately, the hosts of Voices of Resistance were unable to bring you a live show on July 28, but we hope you enjoyed this broadcast about Yamacraw Village that was broadcast this past March.

Today, co-hosts Opollo, Jessie, Robo and Barbara welcomed Alison McCrary, a social justice attorney in New Orleans with roots in Savannah.  We discussed the racialization of resources when applied to New Orleans' recovery from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  The struggle to recover and return is ongoing as we spoke.

This conversation led to the racialization of resources in Savannah as it applies to the former Union Camp paper company and how we repair the damage done to the people who lived with the pollution produced by the company when it was operational.  We also discussed the profit that comes from disaster and other damages and must ask, "who is profiting?"

We also spoke of the upcoming 81st anniversary of the dropping of the atom bombs on the civilian populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, presumably to expedite the Japanese surrender to end WWII.  Wasn't this decision meant to establish the USA as the hegemon?  We honor those who built and dropped the bombs, with statues and other accolades, while we color history to present USA imperialistic behavior as positive, instead of evil war criminals for dropping the atomic bombs on civilian populations.   While we can acknowledge that the enemies of the USA are not perfect, we can question the right to invade sovereign countries, assassinate their leaders, etc.  Framing is one way to interpret an event, and we need to look with critical eyes at how events are presented.  As we resist injustice and fight for equity, Alison reminded us that hope has two daughters:  anger and courage.  And Robo reminded us that we plant the seeds for the trees that others will sit under.

Opollo reminded us that there will be an air quality monitoring & truck counting workshop at the MPC, 112 State Street sponsored by Harambee House on 8/13&14.  Contact Harambee House to register at 912-233-0907.
