  • Today, October 11, is National Coming Out Day and you just heard Diana Ross sing “I’m Coming Out”, a song associated with Coming Out Day. This song was inspired by the composers seeing drag queens impersonating Diana Ross at a night club. At first, Diana Ross was unaware of the song’s connection to the LGBTQ+ community. She was warned that releasing the song could ruin her career. It has since become her opening song at concerts.

  • It’s a shame that Coming Out is still a thing in this country. Coming Out can be difficult for some but please know that you have allies and a community that will support you.

  • Each of today’s sets contains at least one iconic song for the day.

  • Beginning the first set is “If You Were Gay” from Avenue Q, a song that expresses allyship. Then we will hear “Ring of Keys” from Fun Home. And we will end with “I’ll Cover You” from Rent. Here is “If You Were Gay” from Avenue Q.

Then we will hear “Open Road” from the musical Glory Days. Glory Days is a one act, 90 minute musical about 4 high school friends who meet up one year after their high school graduation. The show closed after one performance but has had success in regional theater. In this song, the character Jack comes out to his friends.
