Today is Hard Boiled Guy/Girl Day and you just heard “Hard-Boiled Herman” from the 1925 London Cast recording of Rose Marie, book and lyrics by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II.
What does it mean to be a Hard Boiled person? It means that you are a tough, practical, and emotionally hardened person who shows little sentiment or pity. Mark Twain first used the term in 1886 to mean emotionally hardened.
Many examples of a hardboiled person are often the antagonists and villains in stories but not always. Detectives in noir fiction are often portrayed as Hard Boiled but also the gangsters. Our first set highlights this.
We start off with the Prologue and Theme from Cy Coleman’s City of Angels which will get us into the Hard Boiled mood. We will follow that with two songs from Guys and Dolls. First, Nathan Lane and company tell us about “The Oldest Established” from the 1992 revival and then Robert Alda tells us about “My Time of Day” from the original production. Here’s the Prologue and Theme from City of Angels.

We are playing songs sung by Hard Boiled characters today and you might think that Hard Boiled characters are always men. But this is far from the truth. Here are 4 examples of Hard Boiled women.
First we have the character of Velma Von Tussle from Hairspray singing “(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs”. Then Lauren Bacall as Tess Harding sings “When You’re Right: You’re Right” from Woman of the Year. We will follow that with the character of Mrs. Meers from Thoroughly Modern Milly singing “They Don’t Know”. And we will end with the character of Miss Hannigan and her brother singing about “Easy Street” from Annie. Here is “(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs” from Hairspray.

There will be one final Hard Boiled character after this set, arguably the most hard boiled character in Broadway musical history.
Not every Hard Boiled character is the villain in the story as the characters are often very complicated.
In this two song set, we have Lee Marvin as the complex character of Ben Rumson singing “Wandering Star” from the film version of Paint Your Wagon. Then we have two Hard Boiled characters, Sweeney Todd and Judge Turpin, vocally dueling it out with the song “Pretty Women” from Sweeney Todd. Here’s “Wandering Star” from Paint Your Wagon.
We just heard “Wandering Star” from the film version of Paint Your Wagon and “Pretty Women” from Sweeney Todd, highlighting 3 Hard Boiled characters from Broadway.
For our final Hard Boiled character who exhibits every aspect of our original definition, someone who is tough, practical, emotionally hardened and shows little sentiment or pity, we present the character of the policeman, Javert, from Les Miserables singing “Stars”.
You just heard the song “Stars” from Les Miserables as we conclude today’s show for Hard Boiled Guy/Girl Day.
