You just heard the classic tongue twister, Moses Supposes His Toeses Are Roses, repackaged as the song “Moses” and sung and danced by Gene Kelly and Donald O’Conner from the classic movie musical Singin’ In The Rain.
Today is International Tongue Twister Day. On Broadway, they are known as patter songs. These are songs characterized by a fast pace, speech-like rhythm, and complex tongue twisting rhymes often with alliteration.
Composers Gilbert and Sullivan were well known for their patter songs and we will start with perhaps their most famous. David Hyde Pierce and the cast of the recent Pirates! The Penzance Musical give us “I am the very model of a modern Major-General”. Then get ready for Dolores Gray reciting “If You Hadn’t But You Did” from the 1951 Broadway cast recording of Two On the Aisle. And we will close this first set with “All for the Best” from Godspell. Here’s the tongue twisting song “I am the very model of a modern Major-General”.

Today is International Tongue Twister Day. Rap is the modern equivalent to the patter song and the most famous creator of that genre is Lin Manuel-Miranda. The clearest example of the tongue twisting rap song is “Guns and Ships” from Hamilton. We will follow that with Howard McGillin & George Rose singing about “Both Sides of the Coin” from The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Stephen Sondheim contributed to the patter song with “Getting Married Today” from Company. And we will end with perhaps the originator of rap, Meredith Wilson, giving us “Ya Got Trouble” from The Music Man. Here’s “Guns and Ships” from Hamilton.

Today is International Tongue Twister Day so we are celebrating by playing patter songs. Patter songs are fast paced, conversational, and often have tongue twisting words and alliterations.
For this set, we have two classic tongue twisting patter songs from the Broadway musical Barnum, “Museum Song” followed by “The Prince of Humbug”. We will follow that with Daniel Radcliffe telling us about “Franklin Shepard, Inc.” from Merrily We Roll Along. And we will close the set with “My Mother’s Weddin’ Day” from Brigadoon. Here’s Jim Dale as P. T. Barnum singing “Museum Song”.
