Love is the spirit of this program. The music spans many genres but has unifying themes of justice, love, learning and hope. The messages come from podcasts, sermons and readings from Unitarian-Universalist and other allied sources in liberal religion. The title of this program comes from the words of a beloved Unitarian-Universalist hymn, “Spirit of Life,” including, “Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion” and “Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.”

Today marks the day when, in 1972 at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sally Priesand became the first woman in the U.S. to be ordained as a rabbi.  A Cleveland native and deeply spiritual, her interest in becoming a rabbi came from her parents.  The media attention that surrounded her ordination created what she described as an “almost unbearable pressure.”  She struggled to find a temple that would accept her.  She ended up serving a temple in Monmouth County, New Jersey for 25 years until her retirement in 2006.  Priesand told Canadian Jewish News in 2016, “I didn’t become a rabbi because I was trying to champion women’s rights or be a pioneer or any of those things. I just wanted to be a rabbi… I’m a very lucky person, because my dream got to be fulfilled.”

Friday is World Oceans Day, celebrated unofficially since its origin in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.  The conservation action theme for World Oceans Day this year is preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean. World Oceans Day reminds us that many faith perspectives and indigenous beliefs mandate a sacred responsibility for humans to respect and care for all of life in all its forms and to honor the mystery of what can be perceived but not fully understood.  Or in the words of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual head of Eastern Christian churches, “So what we do to the oceans, God’s vast blue Creation, we do to God’s other creations, including ourselves.”

Sermon
