Duke Ellington - Peer Gynt Suites

Originally released by Columbia Records in 1960In the 1960s, the Royal Swedish Academy of Music made a statement, referring to a Swedish law paragraph called ("Protection of Classics") in the copyright legislation, that Duke Ellington's jazz versions on the album were "offending to the nordic music culture". Ellington withdrew the album and the case was never tried in court.  But the albums were remastered and re-released in 2012 by Broken Audio and it is this recording you are listening to today.

Quintet for the End of Time

Quartet for the End of Time, is a piece of chamber music written and premiered on January 15, 1941  by the French composer Olivier Messiaen while he was imprisoned in Stalag 8A Gorlitz.  This is a jazz version of this work.

Thomas Bergeron’s Sacred Feast

Also inspired by Olivier Messiaen is Thomas Bergeron’s Sacred Feast.  Bergeron gives rebirth to a choral, with flugelhorn floating over a bed of accordion and live-looped electric guitar.   Becca Stevens' voice can encapsulate all that is pure and powerful in Messiaen's music. Becca Stevens along with Bergeron horn(s), Vitor Goncalves  accordion, Hannah Collins cello, Jason Ennis guitar,  Michael Bates bass and Satoshi Takeishi percussion, form a exquisite jazz chamber ensemble that's able to project subtle shades of meaning and expression in Messiaen's music.
