Route 66 - January 10, 2019

Continuing our look back 25 years to 1994. . .

Tonight we're featuring the R.E.M. album "Monster" which was released on September 27th, 1994. This was the band's 9th album, and quite a departure from their previous sound, especially coming directly after "Automatic for the People." It reflects the style of the times, where the music industry was still swept up in alternative grunge. On "Monster," R.E.M. rocks out and emphasizes dirty guitars and overproduced soundscapes which was very common at the time, yet different for this band. Listening now, 25 years later, it's a fascinating oddity in their overall catalogue, yet it holds up as well as anything from that year.

It's not played as often as their other hits these days, yet you'll still hear several songs played on the radio such as "Bang and Blame" and "Strange Currencies." Tonight I'm playing the first two tracks from "Monster," which are also two of the biggest hits.

Here are "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" and "Crush with Eyeliner."
