Ponder His Promises

Adapted from the resource Closer to God Each Day - by Joyce Meyer

There is great wisdom in learning to quietly ponder what you feel the Lord has spoken to you, especially when you’re not sure exactly how it will work out. God may have promised something for your children, given a new direction for your career, or maybe nudged you to start making some changes in your character. Whatever it is, if you’ll trust Him, wait patiently, and ponder what He’s said, He’ll show you specifically what your part is in His plan, and ultimately He’ll bring it to pass.

We can see this beautifully displayed in the life of Mary (the mother of Jesus). When she was just a teenage girl who loved God, an angel of the Lord appeared to her and told her she was going to be the mother of God’s Son—easily the biggest, wildest news she’d ever gotten! But whatever Mary may have thought or felt, she trusted God, saying, “May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38 NASB). And time after time as He was working throughout her life, Scripture says she pondered certain things in her heart (see Luke 2:19).

Many times when God speaks something to us (especially something about the future), we need to be very selective about who we share it with, or even keep it to ourselves for a while. If He tells us things we don’t really understand, or things that seem to make no sense, we can follow Mary’s example by taking time to ponder it instead of running to others for advice, because sometimes their doubt can ruin our faith. Sometimes the best thing you can do is quietly hold on to God’s promise and ask Him to make it clearer to you in His perfect timing. Remember: when God calls you to do something, He always gives you the faith to do it.

Prayer Starter: God, thank You for speaking to me and revealing my part in Your plan. Please give me wisdom on how to move forward and toward Your promises. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Discipline Is Not a Dirty Word by Joyce Meyer

The Bible tells us that all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11). Discipline isn’t fun, but it is essential for our character development and to prepare us for the end result of our hard work.

Self-discipline is a fruit of the Spirit that develops when we do the right thing consistently, over and over again, for a long time. It’s about getting rid of an “I wish I had” attitude and having an attitude of “I’m going to go for it!.”

It may include paying off debt, getting proper nutrition and exercise, changing the way you think and speak, or spending quality time with God and in His Word every day.

As you become disciplined in every area of your life, you will become equipped to handle bigger responsibilities and privileges in the future.

God has amazing plans for your life! As long as you’re willing to do your part and trust Him to do what you can’t do, you will make progress...little by little. And before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the wonderful results of doing the work!
