Evening Eclectic January 31, 2021 Lush Strings

Tonight on Evening Eclectic is a show I am calling Lush Strings.   Tonight’s show was inspired by the upcoming Savannah Philharmonic concert "For The Love Of Strings" on Tuesday evening February 16^th at 7:30pm at the Metal Building of The Kehoe Iron Works which is part of the Trustee’s Garden complex.  So with the title "For The Love Of Strings", I started looking at what they were playing Antonin Dvořák’s “Serenades for Strings”, Edward Elgar’s “Serenades for Strings”, and George Walker’s “Lyric for Strings”.  Now these are all very fine works, but why are they not playing this  or why are they not playing that?  So tonight’s show of Lush Strings we are playing all the beautiful string music that they are not playing. 

So the strings of the Savannah Philharmonic are playing Dvorak Serenade for Strings, I matched them with Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.  They are playing British composer Edward Elgar so I will counter with British composer Benjamin Britten, his "Simple Symphony".  The string players of the Savannah Philharmonic are playing George Walker’s “Lyric for Strings” which is a beautiful piece which I have played on my “Contemporary Classics” program.  But I would like to counter with the 1996  work by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, his Sinfonietta No. 2, “Generations”. 

And I will be adding Arnold Schoenberg's "Verklärte Nacht", Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" and Ennio Morricone’s Gabriel's Oboe from his film "The Mission" in a cello and orchestra version to round out the show.
