Contemporary Classics May 4, 2021 Panorama de las Compositoras Argentinas

Tonight’s program on Contemporary Classics is entitle Panorama de las Compositoras Argentinas or Panorama of Argentinian Women Composers.  This show was inspired by two events: listening to the recently released album by Jacqueline Leclair entitled Music for English Horn Alone from New Focus Recordings and a request to “like” the professional page of a Facebook friend Carolina Heredia.   Carolina is Argentinian as well as is one composer Cecilia Arditto from Music for English Horn Alone album.  This triggered me to look up other women Argentinian composers.  So tonight on Contemporary Classics I am showcasing the music of 5 Compositoras Argentinas: Silvina Milstein, Cecilia Arditto, Carolina Heredia, Patricia Martínez and María Eugenia Luc.

Silvina Milstein

Born in Buenos Aires in 1956. Her early musical education had taken place at the Collegium Musicum of Buenos Aires and the Escuela de Bellas Artes of the University of La Plata.  She emigrated to the UK following the military coup of 1976.  Following studies at  Glasgow University, she took up a position at Kings College London where she is now a professor of music. Her compositions have been championed by the late Oliver Knussen and Odaline de la Martinez

Silvina Milstein’s music is many-layered and complex an uses evocative gestures that draw on the vernacular music of Buenos Aires.

Cecilia Arditto
