Contemporary Classics October 26, 2021 Happy Birthday Vijay Iyer
Today is a very special day. Today is Vijay Iyer’s 50th birthday. And you ask, why am I mentioning the fact that today is the 50th birthday of a master jazz pianist, composer and improviser on a show called contemporary classics? Well that is because he has composed some magnificent works for the concert stage for such masters of concert music as violinists Jennifer Koh and Cornelius Dufalo, cellists Matt Haimovitz and Inbal Segev, the woodwind quintet Imani Winds, the string quartet Brooklyn Rider, flutist Claire Chase and Yo Yo Ma and his global music group The Silk Road Ensemble. And by playing this music tonight on Contemporary Classics is my way of saying Happy Birthday Vijay Iyer.
