And welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman and each week’s show include music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and Commentary, all based on a theme. Our theme this week is Ear Worms.
If you do not know what an Ear Worm is, it is a song that gets stuck in your head and you can’t seem to get it out. Almost any song can become an Ear Worm but they usually have at least one of these things in common - a memorably hummable tune, a driving beat, or a repetitious lyric or musical line. Broadway is especially known for its Ear Worms as the producers, composers, and directors want you walking out humming their tunes. Today’s show will feature Ear Worms so be forewarned now. You might end up going a little crazy. Just kidding.
Our first Ear Worm features Jerry Orbach as Lumiere and Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts inviting you to “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and The Beast. Next we will hear members of the Washington Senators baseball team singing about “Heart” from Damn Yankees. That will be followed by snoopy and the gang from Your a Good Man, Charlie Brown singing the finale “Happiness”. We will end this set with George Hearn and company singing “The Best of Times” from La Cage Aux Folles. Here’s “Be Our Guest”.

Our theme today is Ear Worms, those tunes that get stuck in our heads and we have trouble knocking them out. Next up, we have Bernadette Peters as Mama Rose and the company of Gypsy singing “Together Wherever We Go” followed by Gwen Vernon as the original Charity Hope Valentine singing “If My Friends Could See Me Now” from Sweet Charity.

You just heard “Together Wherever We Go” from Gypsy and “If My Friends Could See Me Now” from Sweet Charity. And you are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz!” on [station ID]. My Name is Jeremy Freedman and our theme today is Ear Worms, those songs that burrow into your brain and we try like crazy to knock them out. Broadway has an incredible number of Ear Worms and perhaps the king of Ear Worms is Jerry Herman. We already heard one from La Cage and we are going to start off this set with one from Hello Dolly. This is Michael Crawford and Barbra Streisand from the movie version singing “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”. We will follow that with Carol Haney singing “Hernando’s Hideaway” from The Pajama Game. And we will end this set with the show stopping “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from the movie version of Hairspray. Here’s the original Phantom of the Opera, Michael Crawford, with “Put On Your Sunday Clothes” from Hello Dolly.
