“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

5-22-2022

  • You are listening to [station ID]

  • And welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman and each week we present music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and Commentary, all based on a theme. This week’s theme is Villains.

  • But before we begin, I have to tell you about a documentary I saw recently on Amazon Prime. The documentary Every Little Step reveals the audition process behind the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line. Included are historical interviews and videos about the original production of A Chorus Line and its development.  During the audition process, you find out what the director is looking for for each character and you watch the actors go through their auditions and call backs. Part of the fun of watching the film is in trying to figure out who best fits the director’s vision for each character. You find out at the end if you guessed correctly. The music is terrific and so is one audition that is so powerful that you cannot help but cry along with the director.  I recommend Every Little Step on Amazon Prime.

  • Now on to our theme, Villains. We are going to start off with Mabel King as the Wicked Witch of The West from The Wiz singing “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News”. Then Clive Revill as the original Fagin singing “Reviewing the Situation” from Oliver. In Once Upon a Mattress, the evil queen sings about her “Sensitivity” to the Wizard. And finally, Ray Walston as the devil himself, sings about “Those Were The Good Old Days” from Damn Yankees. Here’s the Wicked Witch from The Wiz.
