  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman and each week I showcase music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers based on a theme along with some anecdotes, information, and Commentary. Summertime is vacation time for most Americans so this week’s theme is Travel, Modes of Travel and places to Travel to.

  • The first you will hear is the song “Travel” from the musical review Starting Here, Starting now. The show On the Twentieth Century takes place almost entirely on a train called The 20th Century on its trip from Chicago to New York City in the 1930s as bankrupt Theater Producer, Oscar Jaffe, tries to slink away from another theatrical disaster. The opening number is a Medley of songs leading up to the title song all describing this initial event. And finally, we are going to listen to Patti LuPone sing of her destination city, “Buenos Aires” from Evita.  Here’s the cast of Starting Here, Starting Now with this week’s theme, “Travel”.

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz” on WRUU, 107.5 FM, and you just heard “Travel” from Starting Here, Starting Now, the opening Medley and title song from “On The 20th Century”, and Patti LuPone singing “Buenos Aires”.

  • The two guys from the pop group ABBA along with lyricist Tim Rice, wrote the musically eclectic show, Chess. As with two of Tim Rice’s previous shows, Jesus Christ Supertar and Evita, a concept album was produced prior to the show, One song from the album, “One Night In Bangkok” reached #3 on the US Billboard 100 chart. From there we go to a failed Jerry Herman musical called The Grand Tour. No one knows why the show failed as the critics liked the production, score, book, and star Joel Grey as a Jewish man trying to escape Nazi Germany. The song “We’re Almost There” fits with our travel theme as does the show.  And finally in this set, the song “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” from the musical 42nd Street. But first, here’s “One Night in Bangkok” from Chess.

  • New York City is a prime travel destination for people from all over the world. A trio of New York songs is up next. First up, it’s fleet week in New York city as a trio of sailors have a day to see as much of the city as they can in the song “New York, New York” from the broadway production of On The Town. Then from the original production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company we have the song “Another Hundred People”. And the third song of our New York City trio is the Theme song from the movie New York, New York. But first, here’s “New York, New York” from On The Town.

  • And now for our final travel themed set, we are going to start with the song that I sang to myself as my plane lifted off the first time I ever traveled by plane, “I’m Flying” from Peter Pan. By the way, I was flying to Morocco on a concert tour with The Rutgers University Glee Club. Next, whenever somebody asks me, “Where ya going?”, I reply, “Barcelona” and get confused looks from my questioner. You will understand when you hear the song “Barcelona” from the 2006 revival of Sondheim’s Company. Then we are going to go to the South Pacific to hear about the magical island “Bali Ha’i”. And finally, we are going to hear Hugh Jackman and the cast of The Boy From Oz with the finale, “I Go To Rio”. Here’s Mary Martin with “I’m Flying” from Peter Pan.
