Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers all based on a theme with some anecdotes, information, and Commentary thrown in.
This week we are going to look at duets. And I have identified three basic types of duets. The first is two different people singing different verses of a song. Often they will harmonize at some point, often at the very end. This type of duet is easy to sing as a solo. The second type is a back and forth between two people and they often harmonize at some point as well. The third type of duet is polyphonic where the two people sing two different phrases or melodies at the same time. Often each sings their part first before overlapping their parts. We are going to hear all three types of duets or variations on these types today. See if you can identify which type of duet it is.
We are going to start off the first set with Joanna Gleason & Chip Zien singing “It Takes Two” from Into The Woods as they realize that they will need to work together to lift the witch’s curse. Then Faith Prince & Josie de Guzman sing “Marry the Man Today” from Guys and Dolls. In the musical Oklahoma!, there is no true love duet. Instead there is a non-love love song sung by the leads called “People Will Say We’re in Love. This playful version from the 2019 revival is delivered with a coy sexiness that I never heard from previous versions. And finally, Jesus and Judas square off in “All for the Best” from the original off-Broadway version of Godspell. Here’s the duet “It Takes Two” from Sondheim’s Into The Woods”.
