Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers all based on a theme and I throw in some anecdotes, information, and commentary.
We are well into summer and the heat is bearing down on us. That’s our theme for this week, Summer Heat. And our first set is all about the heat. Act 1 of Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, tells the fictionalized tale of the artist George Seurat and the painting of his most famous work. Act 2 opens with the painting hanging in the Chicago Art museum and the people immortalized in the painting complaining about the heat. The song “It’s Hot Up Here” is a marvel of Sondheim’s word play. Next, we will hear Carol Haney and company singing “Steam Heat” from The Pajama Game. Next, it was very hot in Philadelphia when the Continental Congress began the writing and debate over The Declaration of Independence. This was indicated in the opening song of 1776, “Sit Down, John”. And we will close out this first set with Julie Andrews and company singing “Le Jazz Hot” from Victor / Victoria. Here’s “It’s Hot Up Here” from Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George.

Our theme today is Summer Heat on “well, That’s Show Biz!” on [station ID]. Baseball used to be called America’s Pastime and it was the perfect summer game to listen to on the radio. But to some people, it was an avenue to 6 months of lonliness as related in the song “Six Months Out of Every Year” from Damn Yankees. For others, summer meant a trip to the beach to cool off. We will end this set with two songs about the beach. The first, a romantic song from La Cage Aux Folles, “Song On the Sand” and then a one-sided romantic song, “By the Sea” from Sweeney Todd. Here’s “Six Months Out of Every Year” from Damn Yankees.

For the third set, we will enter the pastoral phase of the summer. We will start off with Patina Miller singing about “Simple Joys” from the 2013 revival of Pippin. Next, from The Most Happy Fella, ‘Song of a Summer Night”, followed by “The Song of Purple Summer” from Spring Awakening. And we will finish this set with the Act 1 Finale from A Little Night Music. After various interchanging relationships have been revealed, all said parties are invited to meet or decide to crash a gathering in the song “A Weekend in the Country”. This song demonstrates how Stephen Sondheim fully integrates character development and plot with song and lyrics. First though is “Simple Joys” from Pippin.
