Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman and every week on the show I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers all based on a theme with some anecdotes, information, and commentary thrown in.
Today, the first Sunday in August is National Friendship Day. So today we are going to promote Friendship on “well, That’s Show Biz!” We are going to open the show with the classic Cole Porter song, “Friendship” from Anything Goes. This version is from the 1962 Broadway revival and if you listen carefully, you will hear a pre-Barney Miller Hal Linden. Then, Stephen Sondheim wrote about “Old Friends” in Merrily We Roll Along. This is Rosemary Clooney’s version of “Old Friends” which starts and ends with a recording of her with her old friends Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. After that, we will hear 3 friends singing about no worries with “Hakuna Matata” from the movie The Lion King. And we are going to finish this set with the song, “You I Like” from the Jerry Herman musical, The Grand Tour. Here’s Hal Linden and company with Cole Porter’s “Friendship” from Anything Goes.
You just heard “Friendship” from Anything Goes, Rosemary Clooney singing Stephen Sondheim’s “Old Friends”, “Hakuna Matata” from The Lion King, and “You I Like” from The Grand Tour.
You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz!” on WRUU 107.5 FM and it’s National Friendship Day today. We are going to start off our second set with the original Broadway cast of Oliver! Singing “Consider Yourself”. Then Jessie Mueller and the cast of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will tell you “You’ve Got a Friend”. In Sweeney Todd, Mrs Lovett, the meat pie shop owner, kept barber Sweeney’s razors hidden for his possible return. She gives them to him so he could be a barber again. He sings about them in the song “My Friends”. And finally, from the 2007 revival of Grease, the students of Rydell High School sing of how “We Go Together”. Here’s “Consider Yourself” from Oliver!.

Shirley MacLaine as the title character in the film version of Sweet Charity finds herself in a posh penthouse in New York and sings “If My Friends Could See Me Now”. After that, we will hear Charlie Brown and his friends in the Peanuts gang sing about the baseball game proving that there is no i in “T-E-A-M” team. And finally from the Broadway cast of Alladin, “Friend Like Me”. I was unable to get the original Robin Williams version from the movie as the song seems to be unavailable at the moment in the US. Instead of Robin Williams impersonations in the original, in the Broadway version, the genie, played by James Monroe Iglehart, sings verses from other Disney musicals. But first, here’s Shirley MacLaine as Charity Hope Valentine with “If My Friends Could See Me Now”.
You just heard “If My Friends Could See Me Now” from Sweet Charity, “T-E-A-M” from Your’e a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and “Friend Like Me” from the Broadway cast of Aladdin.
