Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers with some anecdotes, information, and commentary thrown in. Each show is based on a theme and this week’s theme is Movie Stars who you would not necessarily think you would find singing in a musical.
We know Lucille Ball mainly from her television show I Love Lucy. However, in 1960, she starred in her one and only Broadway show, Cy Coleman’s Wildcat. We are going to hear her singing the hit song from the show, “Hey, Look Me Over!”. Next, Clark Gable was known as “The King of Hollywood”. In 1939, the same year that he starred in Gone With The Wind, he starred in an MGM comedy drama called Idiot’s Delight in which he sings and dances to Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ On the Ritz”. We are going to follow that with Elizabeth Taylor as Desiree in the film version of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music singing “Send in the Clowns”. Marlon Brando was one of the great method actors winning Oscars for On The Waterfront and The Godfather. Here he is as Sky Masterson in the film version of Guys and Dolls singing “Luck Be A Lady”. And we are going to conclude this set with Anthony Perkins, Psycho’s Norman Bates, with “Never Will I Marry” from Greenwillow. Here’s Lucille Ball with “Hey, Look Me Over!”.
We are looking at Movie Stars in musicals today on this edition of “well, That’s Show Biz!” and you just heard Lucille Ball singing “Hey, Look Me Over!” from Wildcat, Clark Gable singing “Puttin’ On The Ritz”, Elizabeth Taylor with “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music, Marlon Brando with “Luck Be A Lady” from Guys and Dolls, and Anthony Perkins singing “Never Will I Marry” from Greenwillow.
Our theme today is Movie Stars that you might not have expected were in musicals. We are going to start Set 2 with one of my favorites, Lauren Bacall, who was in two Broadway musicals winning the Tony Award each time. Her first musical was the musical “Applause” based on the Oscar winning movie, All About Eve. Here she is as the lead, Margot Channing, singing the song “But Alive”. Katherine Hepburn was never known as a singer, however she was recruited for the role of French fashion designer Coco Chanel in the musical Coco. Here she is singing, it sounds more like rapping, the song “The Money Rings Out Like Freedom”. Take Me Along was a 1959 musical based on the Eugene O’Neill play, Ah, Wilderness, and starred comic and TV star Jackie Gleason, of the Honeymooners, and actor Walter Pidgeon. Here they are with the title song “Take Me Along”. And finally we are going to hear Burt Reynolds along with Dolly Parton singing “Sneakin’ Around” from the movie version of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Here’s Lauren Bacall with “But Alive” from the musical Applause.

Two of the toughest guys in movies, Dirty Harry himself, Clint Eastwood, and Lee Marvin of The Dirty Dozen, were both hired for the movie version of Paint Your Wagon. Clint Eastwood has a pleasant voice as you will hear in “I Talk To the Trees” and I just love how Lee Marvin croaks his way through the song “Wandrin’ Star”. Here are Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin from the film version of Lerner and Loewe’s Paint Your Wagon.
<PSA>
You just heard Clint Eastwood with “I Talk To The Trees” and Lee Marvin with “Wandrin’ Star” both from the film version Lerner and Loewe’s Paint Your Wagon. To do the film version, Lerner joined with Andres Previn to write some new songs. We are going to hear again from Clint Eastwood singing “Gold Fever” from the movie version of Paint Your Wagon at the end of today's show as I can only play two songs in a row from the same album.
We are listening to movie stars that you might now have known were in a musical this week on “well, That’s Show Biz!” My name is Jeremy Freedman and if you would like to send me theme suggestions for future shows you can email me at wruushowbiz@gmail.com. For our final set we are going to hear from some of our newer movie stars that you may nor have known were in a musical. We are going to start off with Jake Gyllenhaal who played artist George Seurat in the 2017 revival of Sondheim’s Sunday In The Park with George. Here he’s “Finishing the Hat”. We are going to follow that with Christina Applegate, most famous from the TV show, Married With Children, singing “Where Am I Going” from the 2005 revival of Sweet Charity. Then Anne Hathaway played Fantine in the movie version of Les Miserables and here she is singing “I Dreamed a Dream”. And finally, Andrew Garfield was brilliant playing composer Jonathan Larsen in the Netflix movie of tick, tick… Boom! I wish I could play the opening song but Andrew drops an F bomb near the end. Here he is with Vanessa Hudgens and Joshua Henry singing “Louder Than Words”. And, as promised, we are going to finish up with Clint Eastwood singing "Gold Fever" from the movie version of Paint Your Wagon. But first, Jake Gyllenhaal with “Finishing the Hat” from Sunday in the Park With George.
