  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme. I first started hosting this show on the first Sunday in April. The theme for my opening show was Opening Numbers. Now, six months later, halfway through my first year, I thought it would be a good reason to make Act 1 Enders, the half-way point of a show, today’s theme. Most songs that end the first Act of a show are dramatic in some way so that you cannot wait to come back from intermission to see how the story ends. And that is the way it is with almost every one of these Act 1 Enders.

  • We are going to open the first set with Barbra Streisand and the classic “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from Funny Girl as Fanny Brice decides she is going to marry gambler Nick Arnstein. This is from the movie version. In the musical Hair, the character Claude wrestles with the idea of burning his draft card or going to Vietnam with the song “Where Do I Go”.  Then we will hear the song “Go Go Joseph” from Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. And finally, Ethel Merman with “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy. Her youngest daughter June has left the act and Mama Rose sings about making her untalented daughter Louise the new star as Louise and manager Herbie look on in horror. Here’s “Don’t Rain On My Parade”.

  • You just heard “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from Funny Girl, “Where Do I Go” from Hair, “Go Go Joseph” from Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy as we look at dramatic Act 1 Ending songs.

  • We are going to start the second set with the “Tonight Quintet” from the original production of West Side Story as all parties get ready for the inevitable rumble that will open Act 2. Then, in Dear Evan Hansen, Ben Platt as Evan, sees his lies blow up out of proportion after he makes an inspirational speech at school in the song “You Will Be Found”. And finally, Act 1 of Sunday in the Park with George ends with the song “Sunday” as Mandy Patinkin as artist Georges Serurat poses all of his subjects in the tableau that becomes his greatest painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte which now hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago. Here’s the “Tonight Quintet” from West Side Story.

Then Jeremy Jordan sings the reprise of “Santa Fe” from Newsies as he contemplates escaping from the ordeals of leading the union. Then we are going to hear Sutton Foster and the cast of the 2011 revival of “Anything Goes” with the title song. And we will conclude this set with Jennifer Holliday “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls as her character Effie is replaced in the trio.  Here’s “Ever After” from Into The Woods.
