  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary revolving around a theme.  This week’s theme is Autumn.

  • Now I have to warn you ahead of time that you will find most of these songs to be melancholy. I attribute that to the fact that Autumn is the transitioning season that leads to less daylight and colder temperatures. But these songs of melancholy are also beautiful.

  • With that said, we are going to start with the month of September. In this set you will hear Jerry Orbach sing “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks, Victor Garber sing “September Song” from Knickerbocker Holiday, and the cast of American Idiot singing Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”. But we’re going to start with something upbeat, from the soundtrack of the animated movie Trolls, here’s Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, and Earth, Wind & Fire with “September”.

  • Our theme this week is Autumn and you just heard Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, and Earth, Wind & Fire sing “September” from the soundtrack of Trolls, Jerry Orbach sing “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks, Victor Garber sing “September Song” from Knickerbocker Holiday, and “Wake Me Up When September Ends” from the Broadway production of Green Day’s American Idiot.

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz” and this week’s theme Is Autumn. One aspect of autumn is the changing colors of the trees. So color is the theme of our second set.  We are going to start off with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters singing “Color and Light” from Sunday in the Park with George. And we will follow that with Jim Dale as P.T. Barnum singing “The Colors of My Life (Part 1)” followed by Glenn Close as his wife Charity Barnum singing “The Colors of My Life (Part 2)” from the Broadway musical Barnum. Here’s “Color and Light” from Sunday in the Park with George.

  • Autumn is a special time in the northeast especially in New York City. The song, “Autumn in New York”, is a popular jazz standard that was included in the Broadway musical revue Thumb’s Up! There have been numerous recorded versions of this song. This is a live version by Frank Sinatra. Then singer/songwriter Peter Allen gives us a medley of two of his songs, “Six-Thirty Sunday Morning” and “New York I Don’t Know About You”. And finally in this set, Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer wrote an unfinished lyric which his widow gave to Barry Manilow in the hopes he could finish it and add a melody. The result is this stunner, “When October Goes”. But first here is Frank Sinatra with “Autumn in New York”.
