  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme. Today we will be looking at rock and pop COVERS of Broadway songs.

  • We are going to start off with The Beatles cover of Meredith Wilson’s “Till There Was You” from The Music Man. Wison’s widow once remarked that she made more money from this cover than every production of The Music Man combined. Then Helen Reddy covered “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar. We will follow that with The Cowsill’s cover of the title song from “Hair” and we will conclude this first set with Bobby Darin’s version of “Mack the Knife” from The Threepenny Opera. Here’s The Beatles with “Till There Was You”.

  • You just heard The Beatles’ “Till There Was You”, Helen Reddy’s “I Don’t Know How To Love Him”, The Cowsill’s “Hair”, and Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife” on a rock and pop COVERS edition of “well, That’s Show Biz!”. We are going to hear more from Hair later in the show.

  • We are listening to rock and pop COVERS of Broadway songs today on “well, That’s Show Biz!” on WRUU 107.5 FM in Savannah. We are going to start with a rerecorded version of Gloria Gaynor’s cover of “I Am What I Am” from La Cage Aux Folles. This version is shorter than her original version. Then, Janis Joplin famously covered “Summertime” from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Then, Frank Sinatra covered “Good Thing Going” from Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. And we are going to close this set with one of the many versions of “The Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie. This one is beautifully sung by Sarah McLachlan. Here’s Gloria Gaynor and “I Am What I Am”.

  • We open our third set with an interesting Cover of “On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada/Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from Evita by the Carpenters. What I find fascinating about this cover is that the album that this is on came out in 1977. But Evita didn’t open in London until 1978 followed by the Broadway opening. The Carpenters covered it a full year before the show even opened. We’re going to follow this with The Mammas & The Papas’ cover of “Sing For Your Supper” from The Boys from Syracuse. And finally the Jackson 5 give us their version of “Corner of the Sky” from Pippin. Here’s The Carpenters’ faithful cover of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”.

  • The musical Hair is considered to be the first rock musical. So it seems natural that rock and pop artists would be drawn to it. So this final set of Covers is dedicated to Hair. First, we are going to hear Oliver’s version of “Good Morning Starshine”. Then we will hear Three Dog Night’s cover of “Easy to Be Hard”. And Finally The 5th Dimension with “Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In” all from Hair. Here’s Oliver.
