Four Centuries of Great Music October 30, 2022 The Symphony Through the Centuries Episode 11
Today on Four Centuries of Great Music are symphonies from two students of Anton Bruckner, Hans Rott and Gustav Mahler.
Hans Rott was a student of Bruckner and Brahms. His work were praised by Bruckner and castigated by Brahms. It is written that his treatment by Brahms contributed to his persecution complex that eventually led to his commitment to a mental hospital in 1881 and death from tuberculosis in 1884 at the age of 25. We will be listening today to his Symphony no. 1 in E major for orchestra completed in 1880 but not performed until 1989.
Gustav Mahler became a leader of the new music leading to the 20th century, but it is said that there are elements of Rott’s first symphony in Mahler’s first symphony begun in 1888 and completed in 1896.
